Scientist featured in “Hidden Figures” book to speak at PVCC
November 15, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Christine Darden, a retired NASA mathematician, data analyst and aeronautical engineer who is featured in Margot Lee Shetterly’s book “Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race,” will speak at Piedmont Virginia Community College on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m., in the Main Building Auditorium, room M229, on PVCC’s Main Campus in Charlottesville.
Darden joined NASA in the late 1960s as a data analyst at Langley Research Center. She devoted much of her 40-year career in aerodynamics at NASA to researching supersonic flight and sonic booms. Darden also served as technical consultant on a number of government and private projects, and is the author of more than 50 publications in the field of high lift wing design in supersonic flow, flap design, sonic boom prediction and sonic boom minimization.
This event is part of PVCC’s One Book Program, a college-wide reading project to encourage students, faculty and staff to read one common book and participate in book-centered discussions and related programs throughout the academic year. The event is free and is open to the public.
A reception will be held immediately following the event.
