Warehouse Help (Charlottesville)

Description

A rapidly-growing local non-profit food pantry is seeking a full-time Warehouse Assistant. The Warehouse Assistant will work with the Operations Manager, Executive Director, and numerous volunteers to ensure efficient food distribution to low-income clients from Charlottesville and surrounding communities.

Job Duties

Food Distribution

• Picking up and recording food donations from area grocery stores using the pantry 24-foot truck
• Preparing for food distribution hours:
  • Ordering food from the local food bank
  • Learning and applying safe food handling practices
  • Receiving, weighing in, and logging food donations
  • Storing food in appropriate storage areas (shelving, refrigerator, freezer)
  • Stocking and directing volunteers in sorting food and restocking distribution areas
• Managing client and volunteer parking during food distributions
• Training volunteers for parking lot duties
• Assisting clients with shopping carts and groceries

Inventory

• Preparing poundage reports of food donated from area grocery stores, food drives, etc.
• Preparing damaged food reports
• Preparing reports for USDA and Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

Cleaning

• Cleaning of warehouse and pantry public areas (including restrooms)
• Maintaining and cleaning walk-in cooler and freezer
• Performing general outside maintenance
• Cleaning totes and bins when needed

General

• Operating and maintaining warehouse equipment
• Securing building and equipment at closing
• Ordering supplies when needed

Skills Required

• Well-organized and able to train volunteers and delegate responsibilities.
• Able to communicate effectively and work with diverse groups of people, such as staff, clients, and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Requires a blend of pleasantness, firmness, and patience.
• Able to operate 24-ft. box truck and a forklift
• The truck does not require a commercial driver’s license, but successful candidate will need regular driver’s license and a clean driving record.
• Forklift certification a plus, but will train and certify the right candidate.
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Able to work flexible hours. Requires some evening and weekend hours.
• Computer literate in email; experience with word processing and spreadsheets a plus.

Work Schedule

Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry distributes food to local community members in need Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30-8:30 PM, Wednesdays 2:00-4:00 PM and Saturdays 10 AM – 12 PM. To prepare for these “open” hours, we require a Warehouse Assistant to be able to work 40 hours each week that allow enough time to pick up food donations, restock pantry supplies, assist with food distribution, and clean and close facility after each distribution.
