Description

Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA) trains volunteers to work one-on-one with adult students who are striving to improve their reading, writing, and English-speaking skills. We are looking for someone to help us recruit and retain the over 150 volunteers we need each year to successfully run our tutoring program. A significant part of this job is creatively sharing the impact our services have on our students, volunteers, and community through print media, web and social media, radio, television, video, and personal appearances. You must be a good writer/storyteller to be successful in this position.

This position reports to the Executive Director, and also works closely with the Program Manager, Program Assistant, and Citizenship Coordinator, getting to know our tutors and ensuring that their volunteer experience is meaningful. Applicant must be comfortable working with people from a wide range of backgrounds. The position requires juggling a variety of tasks; there’s never a dull moment at LVCA. We are looking for someone to be invested in building relationships and an inclusive environment with staff, tutors, and students. While not a requirement, we are especially interested in candidates who speak other languages, as many of our students speak Spanish, Persian, or Arabic. The position requires attention to detail.

Work hours are mostly daytime, with two evenings in the office until 8:00 p.m. Occasional evening or weekend hours will be required for staffing special events and other activities.

Job Duties

This position offers support for our students, volunteers, and other staff. A complete task listing can be found on our website, but in summary:

  • Recruit new volunteers and help program staff retain them
  • Conduct marketing and communication efforts to tell the story of LVCA’s work and impact in the community
  • Schedule, plan, and manage student-centered events such as the Student Achievement Ceremony, student workshops and field trips
  • Assist students and tutors while in the office
  • Handle registrations and details for training events (some virtual, some on-site)
  • Conduct volunteer info sessions
  • Provide ongoing support of volunteers (acknowledgments of success, etc)
  • Lead a group of volunteers (including board members) to produce LVCA’s annual community trivia game, Wordplay

Skills Required

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Volunteer management
  • Social media/website management skills
  • Event management
  • Creating promotional/marketing/outreach messaging materials
  • Demonstrable writing and editing skills
  • Comfort with technology; willingness to learn new programs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including comfort with public speaking/media appearances
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment

 

Work Schedule
