Are you passionate about bringing talented people together to shape the future? VOCAL’s Co-OPP Program Coordinator facilitates networking and empowerment of the entrepreneurs who are carrying peer support into communities in vibrant and creative ways – Virginia’s peer-run program directors.

The Co-OPP (Coalition Of Peer-run Programs) is a program of VOCAL that empowers people to start, maintain and grow independent, peer-run behavioral health support programs that embody recovery values.

Coalition member programs include both incorporated 501©3 non-profits and unincorporated communities of people who are operating drop-in centers, peer support programs, recovery groups, training programs, warm line operators, entrepreneurs, advocacy groups, and more.

  • networking Virginia’s peer-run program leadership through events and phone calls;
  • one-on-one peer support for executive leadership;
  • empowering leaders that sustainable non-profit best practices are achievable;
  • implementing the DBHDS PRP Data Collection Initiative;
  • a limited scope of technical assistance;
  • a limited scope of on-site board and staff training; and
  • systems advocacy.

Co-OPP PROGRAM COORDINATOR:

The Co-OPP Program Coordinator is a part-time employee of VOCAL. The Program Coordinator fosters trusting peer-to-peer relationships with longtime and emerging leaders of Virginia’s peer-run programs and builds a coalition that supports best practices for sustainable non-profit programming.

If programs choose to request technical assistance, an intake form is available to define the scope of the work. Common areas of technical assistance include connecting to resources on: board governance, board recruitment, personnel management, program evaluation, data collection, strategic planning, and nonprofit management.

SUPERVISION: Supervised by the Executive Director. May supervise volunteers or interns.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • receiving and responding to inquiries about the Co-OPP Program;
  • updating VOCAL’s website with resources for membership-based non-profits, peer-run recovery programs and news about Virginia’s peer-run programs;
  • building relationships with the Executive Directors of the state’s peer-run programs;
  • designing a needs assessment for shared purchasing of business services such as legal, HR, payroll, insurance;
  • planning quarterly networking meetings for peer-run program leadership. The meeting held in March 2017 will be a two-night retreat;
  • presenting leadership development workshops at the VOCAL Conference;
  • learning to implement DBHDS PRP Data Collection Initiative;
  • program and grant administration to include budget tracking and reporting on activities and outcomes;
  • Collaborate with other nonprofits and partners;
  • Provide limited scope of technical assistance to peer-run programs through email, phone, site visits, etc;
  • supporting the VOCAL Development Coordinator to write grants for Co-OPP needs as opportunities arise; and
  • other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Skills Required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Lived experience as a person with mental health challenges/mental illness and belief in and commitment to the principles of mental health recovery
  • Ability to create a climate that is welcoming and inclusive to people from diverse backgrounds
  • Two years minimum professional experience in a 501©3 nonprofit
  • Understanding of principles and practices of trauma-informed care
  • Ability to set boundaries for assistance given – focusing on empowering others
  • Ability to develop training curriculum and facilitate meetings
  • Ability to create charts and graphs in Excel and use basic formulas
  • Self-motivation balanced with ability to incorporate the needs and wishes of a coalition
  • Ability to travel and visit programs throughout Virginia
  • Commitment to follow VOCAL’s Code of Conduct (compassion, trustworthiness, and integrity)
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Experience posting and editing content in WordPress.
  • Management-level experience in a 501©3 nonprofit

Work Schedule

Fifteen hours a week. VOCAL offers flex scheduling and the ability to work from home (with approval from the Executive Director).

Travel required for bimonthly staff meeting in Richmond, on-site meetings with Coalition members, Annual Retreat & Annual Conference. Most of the other work of this position will be done by email, phone and/or Skype.
