Description

The Literacy Council of Madison County Virginia, Inc. is seeking a program coordinator to further its mission of working to help adult learners reach their potential as parents, citizens and employees. This part-time position, budgeted for 15 – 20 hours a week, offers opportunities for community service and for personal growth.

The program coordinator will work under the direction of the Executive Director and Board, collaborating with tutors, other volunteers and learners and a whole central Virginia community to help individuals reach their full capacity.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serving as principal contact and liaison between learners, tutors and/or external constituencies on day-to-day operations; facilitating scheduling, meetings, special projects, and problem resolution.
  • Recruiting, evaluating, orienting and training tutors and other volunteers.
  • Managing learner in-take process (including pre-testing and career awareness goals), seeking continuous improvement in customer satisfaction.
  • Performing or overseeing clerical and administrative support tasks, including creation, typing, and editing of program correspondence, purchasing documents, reports, program handbooks, and other publications.
  • Assisting the director with grant and/or proposal writing as appropriate; may participate in other fundraising activities.
  • Supervising and training volunteers, as appropriate.
  • Collecting and analyzing data; maintaining program/project records and statistical information.
  • Behaving ethically, professionally, and with a high degree of personal integrity in all Council activities and dealings; avoiding all conflicts of interest and appearances of impropriety.
  • Overseeing social media for the Council.
  • Previewing, evaluating and maintaining teaching materials.

Skills Required

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A college degree (BA/BS or AA) is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of two years of administrative experience, although a bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience. A background in education and experience/knowledge of adult literacy/education theory and techniques is preferred; experience with non-profits or social service organizations is a plus. At least intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) are required, and a working knowledge of social media (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) preferred.
