Description

The Literacy Council of Madison County (LCMC) (Virginia) Inc., a non-profit organization providing adult literacy services through trained volunteer tutors, is seeking a Program Coordinator to help adult learners reach their potential as employees, parents, and citizens.  The Program Coordinator assists in the delivery of adult education services, recruits and supports tutors and other volunteers, and facilitates all components of  LCMC educational programs, including ESOL, Adult Basic Education, GED preparation, computer skills training, and workplace skills development.  This is a part-time position budgeted for 15-20 hours per week, under the supervision of the Executive Director, offering opportunities for community service and personal growth.

Job Duties

  • Coordinates recruitment efforts to attract and retain volunteer tutors; organizes tutor orientation and training programs; communicates regularly with tutors regarding student needs and monitors student progress.
  • Serves as principal contact and liaison between learners, tutors, and other stakeholders, facilitating scheduling, meetings, special projects and problem resolution.
  • Organizes and conducts regularly scheduled tutor round tables and in-service professional development opportunities.
  • Participates in local non-profit council and attends training provided by statewide literacy organizations.
  • Conducts student recruitment and intake process; matches student with tutors; evaluates and obtains teaching materials in collaboration with tutors and other stakeholders.
  • Performs or oversees administrative support functions including budgeting, weekly financial updates, correspondence, purchasing, donor solicitations, and assists with creation and distribution of marketing materials.
  • Maintains LCMC social media sites (including Facebook, etc.) with regular updates of relevant materials.
  • Collects, maintains and analyzes data; maintaining records and statistical information ; compiles data in regular reports as needed.
  • Behaves ethically, professionally and with a high degree of personal integrity in all LCMC activities and dealings; avoids all conflicts of interest and appearances of impropriety.

Skills Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; college degree (BA/BS/or AA) is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of administrative experience (BA/BS may substitute).
  • Background in education and/or experience/knowledge of adult literacy/education theory and techniques is preferred.
  • At least intermediate skills in Microsoft Office is required, and a strong familiarity with social media is preferred.
  • Empathetic and outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (especially with adult students and volunteer tutors) and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Enjoys working in a small office setting requiring a balance of independence and collaboration, and at times stepping outside the job description to “pitch in”.
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision and capable of exercising sound judgment/problem solving when issues arise.
  • Experience with non-profit organizations preferred.
  • Belief in and commitment to the philosophy and goals of adult literacy.
  • Ability to coordinate meetings and other special events.
  • Working knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Records maintenance skills

Work Schedule

15-20 hours per week
