Description

The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking an HR Coordinator to join our office in Charlottesville, VA. With offices across the region (Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Asheville, NC; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Birmingham, AL; and Nashville, TN), SELC uses law and policy expertise to protect the South’s natural resources—its land, air, water, coast and wetlands—and to preserve our rural countryside and community character.  Although our regional focus is the Southeast, much of our work is national in scope and impact.

The HR team is friendly, professional, and thorough. We wear multiple hats in one day and are looking for someone who can take on the important functions of payroll and benefits while helping to keep the department running smoothly and assisting with the implementation of new initiatives. We are a growing department and we embrace change; we are constantly assessing our systems to make process improvements. We are also close-knit and supportive of each other’s efforts, and encourage frequent communication on projects and workload. We work hard to establish trust and rapport with staff across the organization, and combine resources and ideas to tackle challenges.

The HR Coordinator will be an integral member of the HR team and will be responsible for administering benefits, processing our semi-monthly payroll, answering HR questions from staff, and providing administrative support for the department. This means that the Coordinator will be comfortable with numbers and with people, and will need to be adaptable and flexible. Having a base knowledge of payroll and benefit regulations will be immensely helpful, and a desire to learn about all aspects of HR is a must. As the HR Coordinator will be corresponding regularly with all of our staff members and working closely with new hires, excellent communication skills are crucial. Having high emotional intelligence is equally important, as well as the ability to intuit what information people are looking for and how to help them find it. This role is suited to someone who takes genuine pride in ensuring that staff feel supported and informed.

The Southern Environmental Law Center places an emphasis on employee growth and satisfaction, and as a member of this team, this position will have numerous opportunities to make valuable contributions to our work.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintains, prepares, and processes payroll semi-monthly for multi-state organization
  • Assists employees with benefit information
  • Ensures compliance with wage and hour laws
  • Provides administrative support to department
  • Prepares semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, and annual tax returns
  • Enrolls and terminates employees in insurance benefits
  • Reconciles benefit statements
  • Assists with onboarding employees and new hire paperwork
  • Collaborates with HR team to recommend and implement efficiencies
  • Administers HR policies and programs as needed
  • Coordinates performance evaluations

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and abilities:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of two years of HR experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Desire and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Commitment to helping foster an inclusive workplace
  • Ability to work under a tight deadline without sacrificing thoroughness and accuracy
  • Knowledge of payroll and benefit regulations
  • Intermediate Microsoft Suite skills, especially familiarity with pivot tables
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Commitment to the environment
