The Department of Human Services is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Helpline Navigator (Family Services Assistant) who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville’s Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.

The Community Resource Helpline is designed to provide financial, career, and material supports to families in need. The Helpline Navigator (Family Services Assistant) will receive preliminary telephone inquiries for the Pathways Fund, Peer Fund, Heal Charlottesville Fund, and The Haven. This position will conduct a thorough intake/screening, offer trauma supportive guidance, and make referrals to appropriate community resources. The position will also assist with system navigation to avoid duplication of contact and effort, and will use a database to maintain documentation and record-keeping, ensuring accuracy and contribute to measuring of outcomes. Performs responsible work involving a variety of office and client service assignments; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done in the office and at community sites is under direct supervision of a Supervisor or Lead Worker.

The hiring amount will be between $16.00 and $18.06 an hour. 
Anticipated to work 25 to 29 hours per week. This is a part-time Long-Term Temporary position, and is eligible for pro-rated benefits except retirement. Long-term temporary positions are not guaranteed to but are expected to continue for greater than 12 months. This position may be approved to be converted to either a 40-hr Long-Term Temp or a Regular budgeted position in the future. If that occurs, the incumbent will be eligible to convert.

Job Duties

  • Responds to inquiries and provides information regarding community programs and services, refers clients to appropriate programs or resources;
  • Completes related documentation, including entering information in to the HMIS data system and/or similar systems;
  • Assists clients in completion of applications;
  • Determines eligibility for services;
  • Conducts financial screenings to determine eligibility for assistance;
  • Provides human service system navigation for clients;
  • Performs a variety of regular office clerical functions in support of program activities, which will included by not limited to submitting invoices for financial assistance to appropriate partners;
  • Provides exceptional customer service to clients and community partners;
  • Performs other related tasks as needed.

Skills Required

Minimum Requirements:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a valid, appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience working with a socially and economically diverse population.
