Description

Purpose: The Finance Director equips the saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:12) by providing effective management of the church’s financial and human resource activities.

Accountability: Supervised by the Pastor/Head of Staff and accountable to the Session’s Personnel Committee.

Particular Congregational, Community, and Staff Relationships: Finance and Administration, Personnel, and Endowment committees, bookkeeper, and Clerk of Session

Responsibilities:

  1. Under the direction of the Finance and Administration and Endowment committees, maintain sound financial accounting practices and budgetary control of the church’s assets, including the following:
    1. Ensure accuracy and timeliness of financial processes.
    2. Reconcile bank and investment accounts.
    3. Analyze the financial status of the church and Preschool monthly, distributing appropriate reports to church leaders and staff.
    4. Coordinate, in conjunction with the Finance and Administration Committee, the preparation of the church budget.
  2. Maintain confidential contribution records and provide contribution statements as required.
  3. Support human resources activities as directed by the Personnel Committee, including the following:
    1. Maintain personnel files for all employees
    2. Maintain employee data as required for payroll processing and as required by the Presbytery of the James and benefits providers, including the Board of Pensions.
    3. Verify accuracy of payroll processing.
    4. Conduct background checks as needed and maintain secure records.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the Pastor/Head of Staff.
  5. Comply with First Presbyterian Church’s Policy for the Protection of Children, Youth, Elderly, and Persons with Disabilities, as well as the Employee Responsibilities found in the Personnel Committee’s Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience required; working knowledge of financial, spreadsheet, and word processing software required; knowledge of human resource practices and payroll processing desired; discretion and ability to work effectively on teams, show hospitality, and foster interpersonal relationships.

Hours: 20 hours per week
