Description

First Tee – Virginia Blue Ridge is looking for its next Executive Director to lead the organization forward.  The Greater Charlottesville Area is always considered one of Virginia’s best places to live.  With four distinct seasons and a strong sense of community, Charlottesville has diverse residents and a strong golf culture.  The Board is looking for a dynamic leader capable of continuing the chapter’s growth and deepening its reach into underserved and underrepresented communities.

The Executive Director (ED) will provide leadership and direction to fulfill the organization’s mission. Inspired by a genuine passion for empowering and helping youth succeed in life, s/he will work diligently to promote and expand the efforts of the organization.

Reporting to and partnering with the Board of Directors, the ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for First Tee – Virginia Blue Ridge staff, programs, expansion and execution of the strategic plan.

The ED will be a highly visible member of the community, representing First Tee – Virginia Blue Ridge throughout the chapter’s service area. S/he will embody the First Tee’s strong commitment to its youth and will promote the organization throughout the community, accelerating its impact, resource development and brand recognition.

Key Criteria for success of the role include:

  • Achieving strong fundraising success through a robust development program, including expanded engagement with individuals, corporations and foundations;
  • Embodying a clear, inspiring, entrepreneurial vision and guiding the experienced team to translate those strategies into effectively executed plans;
  • Partnering effectively with the Board of Directors and staff to build on the success of the program to continually innovate and improve outcomes for youth;
  • Ensuring program effectiveness through evaluation of quantitative and qualitative program analytics to articulate a comprehensive impact story;
  • Expanding and scaling First Tee’s programming in high priority areas, including underserved and underrepresented communities;
  • Collaborating effectively with the Board of Directors to develop strong board governance and fundraising practices.

Job Duties

Board Interaction:

  • Share in the development of the strategic plan and oversee its implementation
  • Co-develop the agenda and slide deck for all board and committee meetings and make presentations as required
  • Attend all board and committee meetings and circulate notes and follow-up materials
  • Develop relationships with and regularly communicate with all board members to understand each person’s priorities and goals for the organization, as well as his or her sphere of influence

 Fundraising

  • Develop the fundraising strategy for capital, operating and programming needs and oversee its implementation
  • Execute the fundraising strategy, including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major donors and businesses through regular touchpoints
  • Research, manage and write grant applications
  • Manage donor database and send tax acknowledgements for each gift
  • Oversee planning and execution of fundraising events, including securing in-kind donations and corporate sponsorships

Programming:

  • Support the development of the strategic direction of the program plan and oversee its implementation
  • Oversee the development of key elements of the program plan, including class schedule, training plan, instruction and reporting requirements

Public Relations/Communication/Events

  • Develop a communication plan and oversee all communication activities, policies and material
  • Establish and nurture critical relationships with donors, community leaders, partners, other chapters, media and parents
  • Manage relationship with First Tee National, including reporting requirements, metric tracking and attending First Tee conferences

 Financial, Administrative and Staffing

  • Manage and report on the financial performance of the chapter
  • Coordinate and schedule board and committee meetings
  • Create and manage the capital and operating budget, including monitoring receipts and disbursements
  • Maintain legal and accounting compliance according to 501(c)3 requirements
  • Build, manage and motivate a high-performance team that supports growt

Skills Required

  • Deep commitment to the mission of First Tee – Virginia Blue Ridge that includes:
    • Reaching all kids with an emphasis on underserved and underrepresented groups (with respect to ethnicity, gender and socio-economic status)
    • A willingness to embrace the game of golf and the opportunities it provides all young people.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to help the chapter stand apart in a competitive nonprofit landscape
  • Ability to build high quality relationships with diverse audiences
  • Hands on experience with fundraising and board engagement
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage up and down
  • Fiscal management experience with the ability to properly safeguard a growing budget
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent skills with various technology platforms (Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, etc.)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Ability to travel to attend First Tee academies, regional and annual meetings and training sessions
  • Bachelor’s degree or at least 5+ years of related work experience
  • Proven track record of leading teams and achieving company/organizational goals
  • Nonprofit, business, golf, and/or youth development experience is a plus
