Apply online at: www.charlottesville.org/jobs The Deputy Director of Human Services is responsible for the management and oversight of Human Services departmental functions and programs including community-based youth and family services, Community Attention Foster Families, planning, grant writing, data collection and reporting, nonprofit funding process, youth opportunity programming, services to community members returning from jail or prison, administrative functions, and information and referral services, community coalitions and collaborations, critical relationships with community partners including Federal and State funders. This position works at an advanced professional and managerial level in planning, organizing, managing and evaluating assigned programs and administration of the department of Human Services. Participates in and leads special projects with departmental staff, community members, organizational partners and other City representatives. This position requires the ability to work closely with people from diverse backgrounds with a nuanced and culturally-responsive approach; and the ability to build consensus on solutions to human services challenges in the Charlottesville community. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Human Services. Serves as acting director in their absence. Supervises assigned managers, coordinators and supervisors and develops and manages budgets. This position also serves on the Department's leadership team and directs operations as assigned. The starting amount will be between $73,474.02 and $95,000 annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Job Duties

  • Oversees professional staff with responsibility for program development, implementation and outcomes in assigned areas; Develops annual department budget in consultation with department leadership team; conducts budget analysis and monitoring tools; and shares budget information throughout department; Together with director, creates performance standards and goals; monitors performance; provides feedback, coaching and training resources; and conducts performance evaluation for staff assigned; Coordinates development and administration of departmental policies including standard operating procedures ensuring alignment with state and federal funding sources; Coordinates and prepares grant proposals with assistance from human services planners, ensuring compliance with all funder requirements; Represents department on City, state and community committees and workgroups; Takes primary responsibility for a variety of special projects; Acts in place of the Director of Human Services when Director is absent; Performs related work as required.

Skills Required

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university appropriate to the functional area (social work, human services, public administration, counseling, etc.);
  • Six years of administrative or supervisory experience in a human services organization with substantial responsibility for program development, planning and personnel;
