Description

The University of Virginia seeks a Communications Coordinator to support the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center.  Founded in 1989, the Women’s Center is an academic support unit at the University of Virginia. The Women’s Center serves students and the University community by developing leadership and compassion through academic community engagement and supporting students’ goals for their time at UVA though counseling and wellness services. The Communications Coordinator generates publicity to effectively convey the Women’s Center’s various programs and services to student, faculty, staff, alumni, and community audiences. The Communications Coordinator works with the Program Director of Communications and Advancement to ensure that all of the Women’s Center’s print and digital outreach materials are thorough, accessible and consistent. They also collaborate on production of a variety of materials to support the work of the other Women’s Center internships, programs, and outreach and engagement efforts.

Responsibilities for this position also include supervising 4-6 undergraduate interns. Interns serve for an academic year as part of the Women’s Center’s Engaged Scholarship program. The Social Media/Marketing team’s interns maintain, expand, and analyze the effectiveness of the Women’s Center’s social media presence, curating relevant content and implementing publicity campaigns for Women’s Center events and initiatives.

The successful candidate should be able to foster a supportive and student-centered environment to empower and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy, as well as understanding the needs of students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds at the intersection of multiple identities. The position requires the ability to work cooperatively with key members of the Center’s staff and other units to produce ongoing updates to published content.

A bachelor’s degree is required with some relevant experience. The successful candidate must be committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as well as dedicated to mentoring students and supporting their personal and professional development and flourishing. This position is ideal for a recent graduate of the University of Virginia who is committed to advancing the Women’s Center mission and is interested in honing their skills in communications and advancement.

Job Duties

  • Coordinate the Women’s Center’s communications and marketing routines (50%):

    • Market events, including maintaining WC internal and external calendars and coordinating. with partner units to include WC events on their calendars.

    • Make print materials and WC swag items.

    • Coordinate event coverage and follow-up.

    • Maintain and update the Women’s Center’s website.

    • Facilitate outreach efforts, including coordinating the Women’s Center’s presence at University Activities Fair traditions and events organized by student groups.

    • Ensure consistent and relevant communication across multiple platforms that is meaningful for the WC’s multiple target audiences.

  • Mentor the social media interns; guide other student interns using WC tools to ensure brand compliance and effective communications from all accounts. (30%)

  • Provide communications support to the WC advancement efforts, including preparing materials for donors and assisting with list management using University Advancement’s platforms (we will provide training on these platforms). (10%)

    • Develop and maintain broad knowledge of the university, such as admissions, student affairs, schools, and alumni engagement activity.

  • Contribute to the Women’s Center’s general operations: attend all relevant staff meetings (including all-staff, programs, and supervisory meetings); other duties as assigned. (10%)

Skills Required

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and two years of related work experience, which may include work as a student or volunteer.

  • Superb interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently, seeking guidance as needed.

  • Ability to work as part of a team; comfort with leading other people and collaborating with other WC staff members to create materials to support their programming.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including editing and spatial relations skills.

  • Self-motivated with an excellent work ethic, driven to iterate, innovate, and learn new skills and tools.

  • Ability to prioritize and remain agile while paying attention to details; ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.

  • Proven problem-solving skills and ability to exercise good judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency using design tools like Canva, Photoshop, and InDesign.

  • Proficiency using Website content management systems and html-formatted emails (like WordPress or Drupal, MailChimp or Marketing Cloud, or similar tools).

  • Knowledge of marketing fundamentals.

  • Proficient in ensuring the accessibility of materials.

  • Experience with using databases or Excel to manage lists/data.

  • Some videography and/or photography experience.

Work Schedule

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.  As a student-facing support unit, the Women’s Center is working in-person; staff members have the option to work remotely 40% of the week at this time.

Preference will be given to recent graduates of UVA who have first-hand knowledge of the culture and values of the University. Training on the relevant tools and platforms will be provided as necessary.

The term of this position is June 1, 2022 – May 31, 2024, with the possibility of renewal; the start date can be adjusted based on the successful candidate’s needs.
