Description

Virginia Humanities seeks a dependable and enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic team as Advancement Associate. With special attention to donor stewardship, prospect research, data management, and cultivation events, this person will help build authentic relationships between Virginia Humanities and its growing donor base. The ideal candidate will also help imagine and implement new strategies for engaging diverse audiences in the opportunity to support Virginia Humanities philanthropically—encouraging modest and first-time donations as well as deepening our connection with long-term and high-level donors.

Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Advancement Associate is responsible for maintaining accurate donor records and mailing lists, conducting prospect research to identify and support fundraising opportunities, developing and managing the advancement team calendar and inclusive donor stewardship plan, managing all print and electronic advancement communications (including appeals and solicitations, stewardship and cultivation materials, and donor acknowledgment letters), providing administrative support to the advancement team, and reporting regularly on donation activity to colleagues and board leadership. The Associate will serve as Virginia Humanities’ primary point person for the Advance database, ensuring standards of donor data accuracy and confidentiality are upheld, mailing lists and reports are generated efficiently and accurately, and all communication with and about donors reflects preferences. Additionally, the Associate will support Virginia Humanities-wide stewardship and cultivation events, which vary in scale, frequency, style, and location across the state. The Associate should be comfortable with a wide range of tasks, from implementing a complex event invitation mailing to representing Virginia Humanities as a welcoming and knowledgeable event greeter.

A nonacademic department of UVA, Virginia Humanities offers a dynamic work environment with a thoughtful and dedicated staff, excellent benefits, and an impressive array of public programming including the Virginia Festival of the Book, With Good Reason radio program and BackStory podcast, Encyclopedia Virginia, the Virginia Folklife Program, grants and fellowships, and more. The Advancement Associate will learn about and support all aspects of our programming at an exciting moment in Virginia Humanities’ 45-year history of serving the Commonwealth. With strategic goals that prioritize democracy, equity, and sharing all of Virginia’s stories, Virginia Humanities is reaching new audiences in important ways with each programmatic initiative.

At Virginia Humanities, we are wholly invested in cultivating a staff that embodies our commitment to inclusion, which is increasingly reflected in our programming statewide. We deeply value the voices and contributions of marginalized communities and encourage applicants who represent the diverse intersections of ability, age, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, and all other unique identities that contribute to the fabric of Virginia.

This position will remain open until filled.  For questions about the application process please contact Ashley Cochran, Senior Academic Recruiter, alc6dk@virginia.edu.
