Desired skills, perspectives, experiences, and characteristics of new board members
Several members of our board will come up against our term limits at the end of the summer (2022), so we are looking to add a board member(s) to our team who:
Supports our mission and understands its importance in the Charlottesville area.
Values adult education and the doors it opens, particularly for the immigrant community.
Asks questions about all aspects of our organization, and has the ability to analyze, problem solve, and actively participate in the group.
Has a strong sense of social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Our Vision:
All adults will have the ability to understand, speak, read, write, and communicate in English so that they can fully participate in our community.
Our Mission:
LVCA promotes adult literacy through equitable, inclusive, free, confidential, one-to-one English and Citizenship tutoring.
We are a small, welcoming board and would love to meet new prospective members. An immigrant/refugee background is helpful, but not required.
Annual Time Commitment (including committee meetings, special events, work outside the board, etc.)
We meet monthly, usually the first Tuesday evening of the month at 5:30 pm. We don’t meet in July, and sometimes August, and the December meeting is a holiday gathering. With time to read the board packet and attendance at meetings, the expectation is 20-22 hours a year. There is one major fundraiser, Wordplay, a trivia night event, that board members participate in either on the committee, as scorekeepers, or on a team. Add in some time on a committee, and the total time commitment is 25-35 hours annually.
