Desired skills, perspectives, experiences, and characteristics of new board members
SSG’s primary mission is to enliven Virginia through access to the best in contemporary art and artists and to inspire new ways of thinking, seeing, and doing. The Board of Directors supports the gallery’s Executive Director and staff in furthering this mission, guided by three tenets: programmatic excellence, community engagement, and institutional stewardship.
The ideal candidate has a strong interest in contemporary art and community-building; is able to attend board meetings and assist at events; is willing to fundraise and/or otherwise lend financial support to the gallery; and is enthusiastic about advancing the mission of SSG in Charlottesville and beyond. A fundraising, legal/finance, or arts background is a plus but by no means required. SSG is committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive board and staff that represent the breadth and depth of the Charlottesville community and all it has to offer.
Annual Time Commitment (including committee meetings, special events, work outside the board, etc.)
The full SSG Board meets semi-monthly. The Executive Committee meets approximately once a month, and other ad hoc committees may form in advance of certain events. Board members are highly encouraged to attend SSG functions when able, including First Friday openings, artist talks, and the annual Gallery Rally fundraiser, and assist with day-of logistics as needed; participate in fundraising efforts where possible; and serve as an ambassador for SSG in the community.
