Are you interested in making a positive impact in the community and in the lives of children and families in Charlottesville? The Department of Human Services is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Youth Counselor Assistant: Teens GIVE/CAYIP who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville’s Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.

The hiring amount will be between $16.00 and $20.00 an hour. This is a 40 hour long-term temporary, non-exempt position. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity.   • A Long Term Temporary position is eligible for all city benefits except retirement. These jobs are not guaranteed, but are expected to continue for more than 12 months. The Long-Term Temporary position may be approved to be converted to a regular position in the future. If that occurs, the incumbent will be eligible to convert to a regular status.

The Youth Counselor Assistant provides direct care and support for youth enrolled in the Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP) and the Teens GIVE Service Learning Program. In Teens GIVE, the primary function involves supervising, organizing, and facilitating community service and recreational activities for groups of teens. In CAYIP, the primary function involves case management, job coaching and work place readiness counseling. Other responsibilities may include group facilitation, transportation, and administrative projects as needed to support the program; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
  • General knowledge of or experience with working with youth and/or previous life and work experience which reflects the ability to provide supervision and support to youth and their families.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or qualified and able to obtain a valid VA driver’s license prior to beginning the position. Proof of insurance. (To view our driving eligibility requirements, visit www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166).
