Description

The Charlottesville Public Housing Association of Residents (PHAR) is currently hiring an Executive Director. PHAR is a small non-profit (3 FT community organizers and 2 PT administrative staff) focused on systemic change to benefit public housing residents. Overview: Executive Director’s Role Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for PHAR staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission of educating and empowering public housing residents to work collectively to improve their communities. The Executive Director will develop deep knowledge of community organizing, leadership development and resident-involved redevelopment, and will implement PHAR programs, supervise staff, and raise/oversee funds, ultimately ensuring improvements to public housing residents’ quality of life.  

Job Duties

Specific Responsibilities Leadership & Management: • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and programs; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic plan goals. • Coordinate and oversee hiring and retention to ensure a competent and responsive staff. • Actively engage and energize PHAR volunteers, board members, Advisory Council members and funders. • Support the strong functioning of the PHAR Board of Directors, including implementation of strategic planning and facilitating informed decision-making. • Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate PHAR’s work, documenting successes and effectively communicating with a variety of constituents. Fundraising & Communications: • Expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support program operations. • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications, from web presence to external relations, with the goal of strengthening the recognition of PHAR’s important work. • Build external relationships with community members, non-profits, and relevant governmental entities to garner new opportunities for organizational growth.

Skills Required

Qualifications The ED must be thoroughly committed to PHAR's mission. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship-management experience and the capacity for generating and managing funds. Knowledge and experience with Charlottesville’s low income community is strongly preferred. Other relevant capabilities include: • Unwavering commitment to leadership development and community organizing focused on improving the lives of low-income people, • Excellence in human resources/organizational management with the ability to develop high-performing teams, • Working effectively with Board members to set and achieve strategic objectives, • Strong public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, • Ability to develop and analyze budgets and accurately plan for resource needs to maintain PHAR’s positive financial situation, • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, • Ability to work positively and effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, • Timeliness and thoroughness in executing documents and meeting deadlines, and • Passion, idealism, integrity, and sense of humor.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week. Attendance at evening meetings and currently two annual out-of-town conferences are required.
