The Charlottesville Department of Social Services is seeking qualified candidates to join our team for the position of Benefit Programs Specialist who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville’s Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.

The hiring amount will be between $18.85 and $25.00 an hour ($39,217.92 to $52,000 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. The Benefit Programs Specialist has primary professional and administrative responsibility for determining eligibility and reviewing the ongoing eligibility of all public assistance programs to include: Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), General Relief and/or Refugee Cash Assistance programs. The position requires responsible professional work to interpret federal, state and local government policies and procedures. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.

Skills Required

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED is required;
  • Experience working in a human services/social services setting;
  • At least 1 year experience with case management/computer database systems;
  • Experience working with Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word software;
  • Experience working with a socially and economically diverse population.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background investigation, a Child Protective Service check, possess a valid appropriate driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, and complete a pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in a human services field or a combination of related education;
  • Experience working in human service/social services, determining eligibility for client services, particularly with benefit programs such as Medicaid, SNAP and/or other public assistance programs in the state of Virginia;
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
